Salary Scales

August 2002 to August 2003

Classroom teachers, Probationers and APT/ST Scale

Classroom Teacher Scale

The salary scales shown in the Association diary are accurate. The Classroom Teacher scale should have, however, a note beneath to the effect that the scales can be applied only to teachers who were in post at April 2001. Some teachers who entered service in April or May 2001 may also be on this scale.

It must be noted however that the scales incorporate increments at August 2002 and August 2003. Teachers do not automatically received increments at these dates. It depends on whether they have had full-time service since the date of the last increment. Part-time teachers do not automatically receive increments in August. (See note on part-time teachers below).

The Classroom Teacher scale below is therefore to be used only by teachers who were in post IN April 2001 and who have been FULL-TIME since that date.

The scale below also shows the "old" scale point and the salary at 1 April 2002 for ease of a reference.

Part-time teachers and increments for the period up to 31 July 2002

Increments are granted according to a series of relatively complex rules which involve adding together all periods of teaching service along with any age allowance. The age allowance applies to a teacher who has completed probation and was over the age of 24 at entry to the profession. At each August these are totalled. An increment is generally granted only when the new total causes an increase the complete number of years of service. The matter is, however, complex. Members in doubt should write to the Association office giving full details of service (including the extent of part-time service).

Probationer Scale

Probationer teachers entering the profession in or after August 2001 are paid according to the following scale. Again, however, the August 2002 increment is granted if service has been full time. Those who have only part-time service since entry (or the date of the last increment) may not be entitled to an increment (see note on part-time teachers above).

At August 2003, the salary £22,875 is now that belonging to Classroom Teacher scale point 2. The salary of 21,588 is now that associated with the new scale point 1. Progression onto the Classroom Teacher scale is always dependent on the successful completion of probation.

Probationers entering other than at August 2002 should write to this office for advice.
