EVALUATING QUALITY IN EDUCATION:
YOUR VIEWS
What defines quality in education? Has quality
assurance improved the quality of education in your school? Does
performance management affect your enjoyment of your work? These
are some of the questions asked by an international survey of teachers
and headteachers in Denmark, England, Finland, Scotland and Sweden.
The findings of the survey will be reported to policy makers throughout
Britain and Europe to inform future education policies.
All teachers and headteachers in England and
Scotland are invited to take part in the survey. Paper questionnaires
have been sent to a random sample of schools – but if you
have not received a paper questionnaire please could you complete
the survey online (from the end of January 2008) at www.edsurvey.org.uk
This survey is being carried out by the
Centre for Educational Sociology at the University of Edinburgh.
It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and
the European Science Foundation as part of a European research
study on Quality Assurance and Evaluation in education http://www.ces.ed.ac.uk/research/FabQ/index.htm.

OECD's LATEST PISA SURVEY
The Programme
for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey is the
most comprehensive and rigorous international yardstick of
secondary-school students' attainments. PISA 2006 was held
in 57 countries that together account for nearly 90% of world
GDP. It tested students on how much they knew about science
and their ability to use scientific knowledge and understanding
to identify and address questions and resolve problems in daily
life. It also examined student performance in reading and mathematics,
and collected data on the student, family and institutional
factors that can help explain differences in performance.
Full details and
analysis will be published by the OECD at 9.00 a.m. on Tuesday
4 December 2007.

PENSION CHANGES 2007 - ADVICE LEAFLETS
The Association has produced a series of
advice leaflets regarding the proposed revision to teachers'
pensions. The leaflets addresses the effects of the proposals,
including specific advice for certain groups of member for whom
