Food For Thought
What children eat and drink affects
their ability to learn.
Scottish
Secondary Teachers' Association members are concerned that the
range and quality of food and drink
offered to young people in schools does not always promote healthy
eating. Their document "Helping
Children Achieve" lists a set of recommendations for the
Scottish Executive, Local Authorities and Schools, aimed at encouraging
healthy eating, and preventing the problem of dehydration.
Assistant
General Secretary Barbara Clark says, "Properly nourished children learn better and
have a more disciplined attitude in schools', yet the costing of
schools meals often makes it difficult for caterers to provide
a sufficient range of health food choices for pupils. Access to
fresh drinking water is also often limited, and eating areas can
be unwelcoming. The SSTA believes this is a problem which must
be tacked as part of the national drive to improve attainment.
We recommend a three-pronged programme of action to be taken by
the Scottish Executive, Local Authorities and individual schools
in order to make healthier eating choices more widely available
in schools, and to educate children towards healthier lifestyles".
